Communion prayer (pastor)
One: O God, who has called us from the shadows into the light, we remember your eternal promise to lead your people from bondage to freedom. We recall how in the fullness of time you gave us yourself in Christ Jesus, the light of the world. We thank you that by the power of your Holy Spirit we are born again as children of light. We remember that on the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, when he had blessed it, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying “Take, eat, this is my body, broken for you.” After supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new testament in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
By the presence of you Holy Spirit may these gifts we offer be transformed from ordinary to holy things, so that as we eat and drink of them we may be fed and nourished with the presence of Christ and so bel united with him until we shall feast face to face at the glorious banquet table of heaven.
The bread which we break is a means of sharing in the body of Christ. The cup of blessing we bless is a means of sharing the blood of Christ.
After distribution (all): Holy Creator, we remember and give thanks for the sacrifice of Jesus, heaven’s child born of Mary, to share our life, our joy, our troubles and sorrows. He lived and died and lives again so that your love might be real to us and through us. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and let us show forth your praise in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication

Benediction
Leader: You are the light of the world. Let your light so shine that others may see the good things you do and give glory to God.

Lesson Genesis 1:1-4 Paula Thoin
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good and he separated the light from the darkness.

Carol Angels We Have Heard on High
Lesson Luke 2:1-20 Sharon Midyette
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying;
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which here just as they had been told.

Many: It is right to give God thanks and praise
Communion Prayer: (pastor)
God, you have made an astounding promise: “I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up.” In the wilderness, a voice crise out, longing for the Refiner’s fire, repair, and renewal, the promised birth (and rebirth) of hope, Called to bear the weight of the promise, Mary sings an ancient song — that God comes to fill the hungry and lift the humble. In the midst of uncertainty, Jesus assures his disciples: just as the tree blooms, so the signs are clear that the kingdom of God is near. In the midst of the darkness of our time we look for the signs: the bud of hope and the branch of peace. While around us the snares of fear and conflict lie in wait for the infant hope, you, O Wisdom, are there keeping vigil with us. We gather at this table, praying that crooked ways be made straight, that the valley’s peace be lifted up and mountains might be brought low so that all God’s people might rejoice together, giving thanks for the mystery and wonder revealed that first night. With your people of all times and places, we await with hope and peace and fulfillment of your vision for all creation.
Bless us, O God, and bless these your gifts. Encourage us to share your life and love, which makes the gifts we share truly holy. Transform us, God, and your world, and bless all your children: the fearful, the lonely, the violated, the hungry, the rejected. O God in Christ, hear our prayer.
